Preparing for Study Abroad
Exchange Partner Admissions Application
Once students have confirmed that they will participate in a study abroad program, they still must file the official admissions application of the institution at which they will study. The application will generate an official letter of acceptance from the institution, which in some cases is necessary to obtain a visa.
Passport and Visa
All students going abroad must have a valid passport. A visa may also be necessary. NYU is not responsible for obtaining the student's visa. Obtaining these documents is entirely the student's responsibility and the student should allow at least two months for processing. Please take time to review the appropriate consulate's Web site so as to be informed of the specific country's requirements.
Inoculations
It is the student's responsibility to get any necessary inoculations. For information about inoculations the student should check with the host institution, the appropriate consulate in New York, or the National
Centers for Disease Control (US).
Health Insurance
Students who carry health insurance through the NYU will be covered while on a study abroad program. For more information about coverage overseas, visit the student health insurance website where you can download the Student Health Insurance Handbook.
Students who carry health insurance through a source other than the university should ensure that they are covered while abroad. I
In some instances, students may be eligible for national health insurance in the host country. Check the partner-specific information pages on this website or with your host institution.
Safety Considerations
As always, students should take care of their person and property when studying abroad. Students should also be aware of any travel warnings or advisories published by the U.S. State Department. Such information can be found on a country-by-country basis at the State
Department's Web site.
Grades & Transcripts
Students who participate in an exchange semester are responsible for obtaining an official transcript from the host institution to be delivered to the Hauser Global Law School Program upon return. All grades received while on exchange must be reported on the transcript. Failure to supply the Hauser office with an official transcript will prevent NYU School of Law from issuing credit for courses taken while abroad.
Additional Information
Prospective students who wish to speak or correspond with students who have returned from studying abroad or who are exchanges students from the university in which they are interested in studying can visit the Hauser office for contact information. In the Hauser office are also questionnaires completed by students who have returned from abroad about their experience.
