Introduction

General Information and Procedures

Eligibility & Admission
NYU School of Law participates in exchange programs with twelve law faculties abroad:

University of Amsterdam	National University of Singapore
Bucerius Law School	Oxford University

Kyushu University	University of Sydney

Students attending one of the above law faculties can apply to attend NYU School of Law for one semester after completing their law program's first year.

Additionally, law students who currently attend a university affiliated with New York University's International Exchange Program may apply to attend NYU School of Law for one semester after completing their law program's first year.  These applicants are considered on a case-by-case basis.

In order to participate in an exchange semester, all exchange students must apply through their home institution first.  If you are selected to study at NYU by your home institution, your application will be sent to NYU for consideration.  The Office of Graduate Admissions at NYU School of Law will review your application and make an admissions decision.  You will then be notified if your application was successful.  Admission is granted from the Office of Graduate Admissions because of the office's expertise in considering international applications.

Registration & Tuition
Prospective international exchange students who are selected to participate in a one-semester exchange will be expected to take a full course load (12 credits) as a non-matriculant exchange student. These exchange students receive priority equal to our LL.M. students when registering for classes; instructions for registering will arrive with the letter of admission.

The tuition and fees for the semester of exchange are paid to the student's home institution; at no time does an exchange student pay any tuition or registration fees to NYU School of Law.

Additional Course Requirements for Foreign Exchange Students
Exchange students whose legal training is not based upon the common law are required to enroll in "Introduction to U.S. Law" which is held during the week prior to the beginning of the fall semester. This non-credit course is designed to introduce foreign-trained lawyers to American Law, the American legal system, and American legal education. If you are participating in the exchange program in the spring semester (January to May), you do not have to enroll in any introductory course.

Hauser Global Law School Program
The Hauser Global Law School Program functions as a home away from home for all international exchange students at the Law School. As a liaison to New York University for all exchange students, the Program should be the point of contact for any questions or issues that may arise while attending the Law School. Ms. Christine Jensch administers the exchange program for the Law School and can be contacted by email at law.global@nyu.edu.

Application & Instructions

Transcripts
Official Law school transcripts, and English translations if the transcript is not in English, are required. The transcript must be provided directly to NYU School of Law from the law school registrar or exchange program coordinator. Please be sure that any prior name that appears on the transcript is indicated on the exchange student application.

Personal Statement
Please submit a statement of not more than 250 words. You may wish to describe your professional interests and goals, as well as the merit of exchange studies. If available, please include a curriculum vitae along with the statement.

Permission Letter
Please request a letter authorizing your participation in the exchange program at NYU from the coordinator of your home university's exchange program.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
 Applicants whose academic legal training has not been in English, or whose legal training was located in a country where English is not a primary language, must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).A total score of at least 600 with minimum scores of 60 in each of the three sections (listening comprehension, structure and written expression, vocabulary and reading comprehension) is required for consideration. Applicants who take the computer-based TOEFL must achieve a minimum total score of at least 250 and minimum scores of 25 on each of the subsections. Applicants taking the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) are required to achieve a minimum total score of at least 100, a minimum score of 26 on the reading and listening subsections, and a minimum score of 22 on the writing subsection. Because the speaking subsection is unique to the iBT, we do not set a minimum score for this subsection. However, the Committee on Graduate Admissions will look for scores of at least 22. There is no conditional admission status for applicants who do not achieve this minimum standard. The Test of Written English (TWE) portion of the TOEFL is also recommended. A photocopy of a TOEFL score report sent directly from the law school registrar or exchange program coordinator will be accepted provide the score has not expired and the photocopy is an attested true copy by the registrar or the coordinator.Applicants also may arrange to have an official score report sent from the Educational Testing Service to NYU School of Law. Application Deadline
For deadlines, please refer to the exchange agreement for the specific application deadline which should be available from your program administrator. Decisions are made on a rolling basis in order to facilitate the processing of students' visa requests. Therefore, it is recommended that the applicant apply as soon as possible.
