European Union Law

European Union Law

This course provides an introduction to the law of the European Union, examining the evolution and development of this (relatively) young and dynamic legal and political entity. The institutional growth and expansion of the EC/EU will be traced, both through the series of "step-changes"--the grand political moments resulting in formal Treaty amendment, including the recent adoption of a Charter of Rights and of a (draft) Constitution--as well as through the gradual evolution of its constitutional order seen in the practice of the relevant legal and political actors. The topics examined will also include the major doctrinal developments of the European Court of Justice in the fields of constitutional and administrative law, and in a number of key areas such as the shaping of the internal market.
